Hello! I’m Jacob, founder of Twisted Tree Publishing.
I started Twisted Tree Publishing with one goal in mind: to empower independent authors.
When I set out to publish my first book, I discovered a publishing landscape filled with confusing and often conflicting information. I also encountered companies and services that seemed far more interested in taking advantage of inexperienced writers than helping them succeed.
I knew there had to be a better way.
As an independent author, retaining full ownership and creative control over my work was extremely important to me. The more involved I became in the author community, the more I saw other writers struggling with the same questions, obstacles, and concerns.
So I began researching.
I spent the next year studying the independent publishing process, exploring publishing tools and resources, taking classes, and speaking with other authors about the challenges they faced and the kinds of support they actually needed.
Twisted Tree Publishing grew out of that experience.

Understanding Your Publishing Options
Publishing a book can feel overwhelming, especially when you are trying to determine which path is right for you. Traditional publishing, self-publishing, and hybrid publishing each offer different levels of financial investment, creative control, professional support, and responsibility.
There is no single path that is right for every author. Understanding your options can help you choose the approach that best fits your goals.
Traditional Publishing
In traditional publishing, a publishing company acquires the right to publish an author's work and assumes the financial responsibility for editing, design, production, and distribution.
Many authors pursue traditional publication by querying literary agents, who then submit manuscripts to publishers on their behalf. Some independent and small presses also accept submissions directly from authors.
If a manuscript is acquired, the author signs a publishing agreement granting the publisher specific rights to the work. Depending on the publisher and contract, the author may receive an advance against future royalties.
Traditional publishing can provide professional editorial, production, distribution, and marketing support without requiring the author to finance publication. However, the process is highly competitive, can take considerable time, and usually gives the publisher greater control over decisions such as design, pricing, release schedules, and how the book is brought to market.
Traditional Publishing May Appeal to Authors Who:
Want a publisher to assume the financial cost of producing the book.
Want access to an established publishing and distribution infrastructure.
Are comfortable with a longer and highly selective submission process.
Are willing to give a publisher certain contractual rights and decision-making authority.
Self-Publishing
Self-publishing puts the author in the role of publisher.
The author retains ownership of the work and makes the decisions surrounding editing, cover design, formatting, pricing, publication dates, marketing, and distribution. Platforms such as Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing and other publishing and distribution services have made it possible for authors to publish print and digital books directly.
This freedom also comes with responsibility.
Independent authors must either perform the various stages of publication themselves or hire professionals to assist with services such as editing, design, formatting, and marketing. The author generally pays these expenses but retains control over the project and receives the proceeds from book sales according to the terms of the platforms and retailers they use.
Self-Publishing May Appeal to Authors Who:
Want to retain ownership and creative control over their work.
Want greater control over their publishing timeline.
Want to choose the professionals who work on their book.
Are comfortable managing or overseeing the publishing process.
Are prepared to invest in the production and promotion of their work.
Hybrid Publishing
Hybrid publishing combines elements of traditional publishing with an author-funded business model.
A reputable hybrid publisher operates much like a traditional publisher. It evaluates submissions, publishes selected books under its own imprint, maintains professional editorial and production standards, provides distribution and publishing support, and assumes responsibility for the quality of the books it publishes.
The primary difference is that the author contributes financially toward publication. In exchange for that investment, authors generally receive a higher share of book revenue than they would under a traditional publishing agreement.
Hybrid publishing should not simply mean paying a company to help publish a book. Reputable hybrid publishers perform the functions of an actual publishing house while using an author-subsidized business model.
Hybrid Publishing May Appeal to Authors Who:
Want the structure and professional oversight of a publishing company.
Are willing to contribute financially toward publication.
Want a collaborative relationship with a publisher.
Prefer more author involvement than many traditional publishing arrangements provide.
Publishing Support Services
There is another option that is particularly useful for authors who want to self-publish but do not want to navigate every part of the process alone: working with a publishing service provider.
Unlike a traditional or hybrid publisher, a publishing service provider does not become the publisher of your book.
You do.
You retain ownership of your work and remain responsible for the final publishing decisions while hiring professionals to assist with the areas where you need support.
That support might include editing, proofreading, formatting, cover preparation, publishing consultation, or guidance through platforms such as Amazon KDP.
This approach allows authors to combine the independence of self-publishing with professional assistance.
